How to Use Digital Grandson

A step-by-step guide to getting the most out of the extension.

1. Install the extension

Add Digital Grandson to Chrome from the Chrome Web Store. No account or signup is needed. Once installed, you'll see the shield icon in your browser toolbar.

2. The floating widget

On every page you visit, a small pill-shaped tab appears on the right edge of your screen. It says "Trust Check" and has the Digital Grandson mascot. This is your main control for everything.

  • Hover over the tab to see it slide out from the edge.
  • Click the tab to open the menu with available actions.

3. Move and resize the tab

The tab is fully customizable so it never gets in your way:

  • Drag it up or down: Click and hold the tab, then drag vertically to move it. Release where you want it. The tab will remember its position on every page after that.
  • Resize it: Open the menu and use the - / + buttons in the "Size" row to shrink or grow the whole widget from 60% to 180%. Click "Reset" to return to 100%.

4. Analyze a page

This is the core feature. When you're reading something and want to know if it's trustworthy:

  • Click the "Trust Check" pill in the corner.
  • Click "Analyze This Page" in the menu that opens.
  • Wait a few seconds. The pill will pulse while it's working.
  • You'll see a color-coded verdict: green (Trustworthy), orange (Use Caution), dark orange (Suspicious), or red (Unreliable).

5. Read the results

After analysis, click the verdict pill to see the full breakdown:

  • Summary — A plain-English explanation of what was found.
  • Written by AI? — Whether the article was likely generated by a bot.
  • Is it true? — Whether claims are sourced and hold up.
  • Who wrote it? — Track record of the site and author.
  • Trying to trick you? — Whether the writing uses emotional tricks or scare tactics.
  • Data Governance — Whether the site has clear privacy practices.

Click any dimension row to expand it and see a detailed explanation.

6. Scan images and videos for AI

There are two ways to check if media is AI-generated or a deepfake:

  • Hover method: Move your mouse over any image or video on the page. A small magnifying glass button appears in the top-right corner. Click it to scan that media.
  • Right-click method: Right-click any image or video and select "Check with Digital Grandson" from the context menu.

Behind the scenes, Digital Grandson runs five different AI detection services in parallel (Sightengine, Hive AI, Google Gemini Vision, C2PA Content Credentials, and IPTC metadata) and combines their results into a single verdict you can trust. Results appear as a brief notification and are also saved in the widget's menu under "Media Scans."

7. Quick check selected text

If you only want to fact-check a specific paragraph or claim instead of the whole page, highlight the text and right-click. Choose "Check selected text" from the context menu and you'll get a small toast with a verdict, confidence score, and key claims found in that snippet.

8. Compare AI providers (BYOK power users)

If you've configured two or more AI providers in Settings (e.g. both Anthropic and OpenAI), you'll see a "Second Opinion" button after running an analysis. Click it to re-run the analysis with a different provider and see the two verdicts side by side. Useful when you want extra confidence on a borderline call.

9. Checkout security scanning

When you visit a payment or checkout page, Digital Grandson automatically scans for security red flags: payment forms pointing to suspicious domains, hidden skimmer scripts, missing HTTPS, untrusted iframes, and other Magecart-style fraud signals. If anything looks risky, the tab will turn orange or red with a warning. This runs passively — you don't have to click anything.

10. Languages

The widget, settings page, and landing page support 20 languages. To switch languages, open Settings → Language tab and pick your language. The widget will reload in that language on every open page automatically. Hebrew, Arabic, Yiddish, and Urdu are right-to-left and the entire interface mirrors accordingly.

11. Visual analysis

By default, when you click "Analyze This Page," Digital Grandson also captures a screenshot of the visible page and sends it to the AI alongside the text. This helps catch dark patterns, fake countdown timers, ad density problems, and visual brand impersonation that text-only analysis would miss. You can turn this off in Settings if you'd rather only send text.

12. Configure your settings

Click the Digital Grandson icon in your browser toolbar (or click "Settings" inside the widget menu) to open the settings page. From there you can:

  • Choose your AI provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, or Moonshot).
  • Select a specific model.
  • Enter your API keys for text analysis and image scanning.
  • Test your connection to make sure everything works.

13. Free trial and pricing

  • 50 free analyses — with no account or payment needed.
  • After that, you can purchase full access for $5 one-time, which includes 30 days of managed service.
  • After 30 days, you can either subscribe to the monthly plan ($5/month) or bring your own API key and use it free forever.

14. Privacy & what we store

Digital Grandson is designed with privacy in mind:

  • Stays local: Your API keys, settings, history cache, and language preference live in your browser only. We never see them.
  • Sent to your AI provider: The page text you choose to analyze (capped at 8,000 characters) and optional screenshot. In BYOK mode this goes directly from your browser to your provider — we're never in the middle.
  • Sent to our backend (managed mode only): The page text and a logging snippet (first 500 chars) so we can assess detection accuracy. After 90 days, all user-identifying fields are stripped.
  • Browsing history: Never collected. We only see pages you explicitly click "Analyze" on.

Full details are in our privacy policy.

Tips

  • Results are cached for 5 minutes per page, so revisiting a page you already checked won't use another analysis.
  • Click "Re-analyze" in the results card if the page content has changed and you want a fresh check.
  • The widget works on any regular webpage. It won't appear on Chrome internal pages (like settings or the new tab page).
  • If the widget is in the way, drag it up or down to a less inconvenient spot.
  • Toggle "Larger Text" in the menu if you want bigger fonts inside the widget.
